ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity football team responded in a major way after last week's overtime loss to Trinity Christian, coming away with a convincing 51-0 region victory over the Landmark Christian War Eagles on Friday, Sept. 27 on Homecoming at the Upper Campus Football Field.

The Mustangs have now won three straight Homecoming contests dating back to 2017.

Mount Vernon struck early and often against the War Eagles, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter.

On the first drive of the game, Blake Kytle connected with Skylar Stefaniak on screen pass that resulted in a 73-yard touchdown. The PAT failed, but Mount Vernon captured the lead at 6-0.

After forcing the War Eagles out on offense, the Mustangs got the ball back and scored when Kytle connected with Andrew Douglas for a 48-yard score. William Lavender was successful on point-after and Mount Vernon led 13-0 with 1:54 to play in the opening quarter.

After trading offensive possessions early in the second quarter, Alex VanLandingham intercepted a Jax Fisher pass with 8:41 to play and the Mustangs capitalized, scoring two minutes later when Kytle found Jonathan Hammond for a 14-yard score. Lavender made the PAT and the Mustangs led 20-0.

The final score of the first half came when Kytle found Douglas again for a 65-yard touchdown reception. Lavender's extra point was good once more and Mount Vernon led 27-0 at intermission.

In the second half, the Mustangs put the game out of reach for good.

After forcing a War Eagle punt, Mount Vernon drove 65-yards capped off by a Stefaniak 12-yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a 34-0 lead with 8:28 to play in the third period.

Kytle connected with Douglas with 5:34 to play in the third quarter for a 24-yard touchdown, giving the Mustangs a 41-0 advantage.

With 1:04 remaining in the third frame, Lavender nailed a 37-yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 44-0 lead to force a running clock in the final period.

Both squads traded possessions in the running clock fourth quarter until Mount Vernon's Parker Carman rushed in a touchdown from one-yard away. Lavedner's PAT was successful and the Mustangs led 51-0.

Kytle finished the game 12-of-15 with five touchdowns and 366 yards.

Douglas led the squad in receiving with five catches, 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Carman was Mount Vernon's leading rusher with 66 yards on 12 carries.

Mount Vernon's defense was stellar the entire game, allowing 106 combined yards of offense (rushing and receiving), while forcing three interceptions (Jack Mette 2, VanLandingham 1).

The Mustangs (3-2, 1-1 Reg. 5-1A) return to the gridiron on Friday, Oct. 4, traveling to take on region rival Holy Innocents (5-0, 2-0 Reg. 5-1A).

Kickoff against the Golden Bears is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Baker Field.
