Girls and Boys Hoops Earn Home Sweep Against Fellowship Christian Paladins

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity girls and boys basketball teams were in action on Tuesday night, Nov. 19, hosting the Fellowship Christian Paladins at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.

Both squads came away with victories, with the varsity girls winning 46-38 followed by an 80-72 triumph by the varsity boys.

In the girls contest, the Mustangs led 7-6 at the end of the first period and went on a 12-10 run in the second quarter to lead 20-18 at halftime.

A 14-8 spurt by Fellowship gave the Paladins a 32-28 lead heading into the final quarter.

But the Mustangs closed out the contest on a 16-6 to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Katieanne Peterson led the Mustangs in scoring with 29 points, including 12 points in the final frame.

Peterson also nailed six 3-pointers en route to the victory.

Kaya Beard paced the Paladins in scoring with 28 points, 16 of which came in the second half.

In the varsity boys game, the Mustangs jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and poured on 25 points in the second period en route to a 40-25 lead at intermission.

The offense continued to fire on all cylinders, putting up 21 points in the third quarter to lead 61-46 heading into the final period.

But the Paladins fought back into the game in a major way, scoring 22 points and tying the game at 71-71 with 2:20 to play in regulation.

Mount Vernon dug in and finished the game on an 8-1 run to pick up its first home victory of the season.

Chase Clemmons paved the way in scoring for the Mustangs, knocking in 21 points.

Three other players were in double figures for the Mustangs: Jordan Wicker (18), Alex Morge (14) and Robbie Long (10).

Mount Vernon was dialed in from downtown, draining seven 3-pointers with three coming from Clemmons.

Zak Thomas led the Paladins in scoring with 25 points.

Teammate Zion Pleasant had 10 points as well.

The varsity girls (3-2) and varsity boys (2-0) return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday, hosting the 4A Marist War Eagles on Tuesday, Dec. 3

Tip-off for the varsity girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
