ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team got the 2020 season off on the right foot, winning its first three games over President's Day Weekend.
Mount Vernon picked up a 5-2 road victory against Lakeside on Friday, Feb. 14 before picking up a 7-0 win over South Gwinnett and a 12-2 triumph over Stephenson High School on Monday afternoon, Feb. 17, at the Brook Run Baseball Turf Fields.
Against Stephenson, Mount Vernon led 5-1 after the the first three innings before ending the final thee frames on a 7-1 scoring run.
The Mustangs outhit Stephenson 11-6 as well.
Alex Thomas was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and three runs scored to lead the Mustang offense while teammate Austin Taylor was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Mustangs were patient at the plate, drawing 10 walks while striking out just three times.
Jackson Denney picked up the complete game win against Stephenson, tossing six innings, scattering six hits, allowing two runs and striking out eight batters.
In the first game of Monday's doubleheader, Thomas was nearly perfect on the hill for the Mustangs against South Gwinnett.
The righty tossed a complete game and was one out away from throwing a perfect game in the top of the seventh inning before allowing a hit.
Still, Thomas shined all afternoon, throwing just 68 pitches, striking out six batters and allowing no walks.
Nate Anderson, Cole Forrest, Jack Sims and Thomas each had one RBI for the Mustangs, who outhit South Gwinnett 4-1.
In Friday's victory at Lakeside, Forrest was 3-for-5 with three RBI's. Sims also added one RBI in the winning bid.
Sims picked up with win on the mound for the Mustangs.
The junior tossed 4.2 innings, allowing two hits while racking up eight strikeouts.
The Mustangs (3-0) are back on the diamond Tuesday, Feb. 18, traveling to Pinecrest Academy (weather permitting).
First pitch against the Paladins is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
