ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon, August 27, defeating the Holy Innocents Bears 6-5 in ten innings at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
With the victory, the Mustangs pushed their winning streak to four games and picked up their third Area 3 win in as many tries.
The Mustangs trailed 2-0 after the first inning but got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second frame when Jane Holliday singled home Ruby Burnett to cut the Bear lead in half.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Bears and Mustangs each brought runs home in the fifth.
The Bears took a 3-1 lead in the top half but Mount Vernon tied that game at 3-3 on a RBI double by Grace Westmoreland and a sacrifice fly by Holliday.
The Mustangs took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Savanna Messner sacrifice fly to score Frances Hunt for a 4-3 advantage.
One out away from victory, the Mustangs allowed two runs to the Bears in the top of the seventh inning to trail 5-4.
But in the bottom of the seventh frame with two outs, the Mustangs pushed one run across to tie the game at 5-5 when Lauren Dove singled to score Kendall Slayden.
Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings and agreed to play the international tie rule beginning the inning with a runner on second base.
The Mustangs retired the Bears in the top of the tenth inning and won the game in the bottom half.
Holliday laid down a sacrifice bunt and forced the Bears into a throwing error to score Grace Westmoreland for the victory.
Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs tossing 5.1 innings while striking out eight batters and allowing two runs on three hits.
The Mustangs (4-0, 3-0 Area 3) return to the diamond on Monday, August 31, hosting 6A North Atlanta High School.
Mount Vernon defeated the Warriors 5-4 on August 10 to open the 2020 season.
First pitch for Monday's contest is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
