WATKINSVILLE, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity girls tennis team is headed to the GHSA Class-A Private Sweet-16 for the first time in program history.
The Mustangs, the no. 3 seed from Region 5-1A, defeated the Prince Avenue Wolverines, the no. 2 seed from Region 8-1A, 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Oconee Veterans Park to earn a trip to the next round.
Sofia Tur posted a win at no. 1 singles for the Mustangs, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Mount Vernon also took both doubles matches to complete the victory.
Ellie Stalzer/Rory Hansen won 7-5, 6-3 and Ashley Burke/Kendall Slayden were victorious 6-0, 6-4.
With the win, the Mustangs will host Darlington, the no. 4 seed from Region 7, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers upset King's Ridge, the no. 1 seed from Region 6, in the first round of play.
