DACULA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity football team picked up its fifth straight win on Friday night, Oct. 8, defeating the Hebron Christian Lions 24-7 at Burlingame Field to open up Region 5-1A action.
With the win, the Mustangs have qualified for the GHSA Class-A Private State Playoffs for a sixth consecutive season.
Luke Barnes finished the game 11-of-19 passing with 266 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Mount Vernon led the air attack all night, with three players totaling over 50 yards on receptions: Austin Taylor (94), Nagari Tophia (71) and Jonathan Gallinaro (56).
All three players recorded a touchdown for Mount Vernon as well.
Liam O'Toole led the Mustangs in rushing with 69 yards on 20 carries.
Mount Vernon's other offense came via a field goal late in the game from Will Lavender to seal the victory.
The Mustangs have outscored opponents 174-38 during their current win streak.
The Mount Vernon defense has allowed seven points or fewer in three of the last five games as well.
Mount Vernon (5-2, 1-0 Reg. 5-1A) returns to the grid iron on Friday, Oct. 15, hosting Providence Christian for Homecoming 2021.
Kickoff against the Storm is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Upper Campus Stadium Field.
