ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team saw its three-game wining streak snapped on Friday, Sept. 23, falling to the Athens Academy Spartans 46-21 at Ron Hill Field.
The Mustangs fell behind early with the Spartans striking first with 6:00 to play in the first period on a Sam Bush 11-yard rush.
Athens Academy found the end zone again with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter on a Jeremiah Wingield 17-yard score. The PAT failed but the Spartans remained ahead 13-0.
Mount Vernon got on the board late in the first quarter when Sam Nazarian found Jonathan Gallinaro on a 56-yard touchdown reception. After Nathan Webb's PAT, the Mustangs trailed by just six at 13-7.
The Spartans shut out the Mustang offense in the second quarter while posting two scores, both coming on Bush rushes to lead 27-7 at intermission.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs started with a bang, scoring on the opening drive when Nazarian connected with Gallinaro again, this time from 71-yards, to bring the Mustangs within two possessions at 27-14.
But the Spartans would respond with back-to-back touchdowns to put the game away.
Bush rushed for a three-yard touchdown and Austin McGee broke away for a 52-yard touchdown to put Athens Academy ahead 39-14.
Bush struck again for his fifth touchdown less than two minutes into the fourth quarter on a 12-yard score to put Athens Academy ahead 46-14.
Mount Vernon's final score came with less than a minute remaining in the contest on a Nazarian 28-yard touchdown to put the score at 46-21.
Nazarian finished with 231 yards in the air and connected on 9-of-24 passes.
Gallinaro paced the team in receiving with 135 yards while Walker Warshaw added 24 yards rushing.
The Mustangs (3-2) are back in action on Friday, Sept. 30, traveling to Elbert County High School.
Kickoff against the Blue Devils is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Granite Bowl in Elberton, Ga.
