ATLANTA - For the second consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team is Columbus bound!
The Mustangs accomplished that feat on Wednesday evening, Oct. 19 by defeating the Dade County Wolverines 9-2 in an elimination game of the GHSA Class-A Super Regional round at Mustang Park.
After the dropping the first game of the day to the Wolverines 6-3, the Mustangs rose to the occasion and secured their spot in the double elimination tournament next week.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Grace Westmoreland lined out to right field allowing Kennedy Reynolds to tag up and score for a 2-1 advantage.
A batter later, Reese Hickey grounded out to shortstop to bring in Ruby Burnett for a 3-2 lead.
The Wolverines pulled within a run in the top of the fourth inning on a Reagan Page single to center field to score Kendyl Phillips for a 3-2 contest.
Mount Vernon's bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth frame, scoring three runs to extend the lead to 6-2.
Frances Hunt doubled to plate Lauren Dove, Reynolds grounded out to short to bring home Mollie Martin and Priscilla Andrin singled to right field to bring around Hunt.
The Mustangs added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 8-2.
Hunt singled to score Lauren Dove followed by a Reynolds fly ball to right field that was mishandled by the Wolverine defense to allow Martin to come home.
Mount Vernon's final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on Reagan Hickey sacrifice fly to score Mia Winokur.
Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.
The righty tossed seven innings, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six batters while surrendering just two walks.
Kayleigh Warnock was tagged with the loss for the Wolverines, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (four earned) and picking up one strikeout.
The Mustangs (25-5) will play the first game of the Class-A DI Elite 8 in Columbus on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against the Bleckley County Royals.
According to MaxPreps, the Mustangs have never faced off against Bleckley County in program history.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Columbus South Commons Softball Complex.
