MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up its first region win of the season on Friday night, Dec. 2, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 70-29 at the Athletic Center.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 20-5 lead after the first quarter and secured a 25-9 run in the second period to go ahead 45-14 at halftime.
The Mustangs outscored the Wolfpack 11-8 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the final frame to earn the win.
Three Mustangs were in double figures scoring for Mount Vernon: AJ Patterson (15), ShaYah Goba (13) and Kenneth Southall (12).
The Mustangs capitalized by getting to the rim on the offensive end of the floor.
Twenty-four made field goals for Mount Vernon came inside the 3-point line as well.
Mount Vernon finished 15-for-19 from free thrown line in the contest.
Riley Hughes paced the Wolfpack in scoring with 14 points, including two made 3-pointers.
The Mustangs (7-2, 1-0 Reg. 6-1A) return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 6 hosting Atlanta International School in another region game.
Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
