STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Baseball team slugged their way to a season-opening victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Stephenson High School Jaguars 17-3 on the road.
The Mustangs scored early and often, pushing ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a Hampton Hudson single that brought home Dylan Holbrook.
The Jaguars answered back in the bottom half on a Stephen Taylor infield single to plate Maceo Hicks to tie the game at 1-1.
Mount Vernon broke out the bats even more in the top of the second, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Nate Thomas reached on an error that brought home Aiden Hoath and Dawson Stevens.
Holbrook grounded out the following at-bat but Landon Brice came in to score.
The final run of the inning for the Mustangs came on a Thomas steal of home.
The Mustangs added four more runs in top of the third to go ahead 9-1.
Aiden Hoath grounded out to plate Brooks Champney, Avery Anderson laced a single into left field to bring home Brice and Stevens and Hudson drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Thomas to touch home.
The Jaguars added another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 9-2 contest.
But Mount Vernon wasn't finished, outscoring the Jaguars 8-0 over the next two innings to bring the run rule into effect and claim the win.
Nate Shumway (1-0) picked up the win for the Mustangs tossing 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, striking out five batters and surrendering five walks.
Daniel O'Keefe and Thomas each pitched in relief for Mount Vernon, combining for five strikeouts, four walks and one hit.
Mount Vernon (1-0) is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 9 traveling to Westlake High School.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
