ATLANTA - For the first time in program history, the Varsity Boys Basketball team is headed to the Elite 8 in the GHSA State Tournament.
The Mustangs accomplished that feat by trouncing the Chattooga High School Indians 87-49 on Saturday night, Feb. 25 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
After a competitive first quarter saw the Mustangs take an eight point lead, Mount Vernon turned on the afterburners in the second period besting the Indians 31-11 to take a 50-22 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs continued to keep the pedal to the metal, erupting for 30 points in the third quarter while limiting the Indians to nine points.
Playing a shortened final quarter, Mount Vernon sealed the win despite being outscored 18-7.
Five Mustangs finished in double-figures scoring.
Kenneth Southall led the squad with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second quarter.
AJ Patterson knocked in 15 points, 10 coming in the Mustangs' second quarter surge.
Sha'Yah Goba totaled 13 points while teammate Dennis Scott III finished with 12 on four made 3-pointers.
Xavier Shegog finished with 10 points as well.
Mount Vernon (22-8) will now travel to Temple High School for the Class-A DI Elite 8 on Wednesday, March 1.
The Tigers (24-5), the no. 1 seed from Region 4, came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Dublin Fighting Irish 70-61 on Saturday night to advance in the State Tournament.
Temple also won home court advantage by virtue of coin flip administered by the GHSA when two schools facing each others are no. 1 seeds.
Tip-off for Wednesday's highly anticipated Elite 8 match-up is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Temple, Ga.
