ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, August 10, defeating the Holy Innocents Bears 7-0 at the Battle of Sandy Springs.
After a scoreless first inning, MV got on the board in the top of the second when Olivia McDougall scored on a Bear infield error.
MV made it 2-0 when Caroline Birdsey singled to plate Mollie Martin.
The Mustangs added to their lead in the third inning when Reese Hickey singled to right field to score Cameron Bogdanchik for a 3-0 lead.
Two batters later, Kirsten Abbott singled to bring in Hickey for a 4-0 Mustang advantage.
Mount Vernon scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, the first on a Stella Meyer single that plated Birdsey and the second on a Hickey single that brought home Meyer for a 6-0 lead.
MV's final run of the contest came in the top of the seventh inning when Alex Schiff scored on a passed ball, giving the Mustangs 7-0 edge.
Martin was dominant in the circle, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk.
In the second game of the day, MV fell to North Springs 7-6 in nine innings.
Mount Vernon (1-3) returns to the field on Tuesday, August 13 traveling to Tattnall Square Academy in Macon, Ga.
First pitch against the Trojans is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Ronnie Bland Softball Complex.
